Actus moves forward on LEED initiatives at Hawaii Air Force Project
Scheduled to break ground this month at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, the Hickam Community Housing Office will be built using the LEED New Construction (NC) rating system. The LEED goal is Certified. The building will feature day-lighting in each office using solatubes, A/C fan coil units in each office for individual thermal comfort, water reduction that is more than 40 percent better than conventional buildings, and an energy efficiency performance exceeding 17 percent better than a building built according to 2004 standards.
At Onizuka Village, construction of the first 104 units of 304 units that will be certified LEED Silver under the LEED for Homes Rating System is underway. The homes will feature Energy Star exhaust fans, water conserving plumbing fixtures, low VOC paint and high efficiency air filters.
LEED projects taking place at Actus projects in Hawaii have become a laboratory to experience and teach all participants the principles and practice of the triple bottom line of sustainability - environmental, social and economic. Day-to-day interaction with construction teams and subcontractors working on LEED projects involves a lot of education about what is important to LEED projects and the acceptable performance levels. Erosion control measures and proper storage of materials are as important to LEED projects as installing water efficient plumbing fixtures.
