Major Renovations Underway In Hickam Community Housing’s Historic District

print version
Major Renovations Underway In Hickam Community Housing’s Historic District Renovating historic homes can be challenging, especially when attempting to preserve a home’s historic integrity while also making it comfortable and efficient for a modern-day family.

Taking into account that the Air Force, Hickam Community Housing (HCH) and Actus Lend Lease are undertaking one of the largest contiguous historic community restoration projects in the nation, the task can appear to be quite daunting. However, as a result of a great collaborative effort among HCH, Actus and Air Force leadership, Airmen and their families will have an opportunity to live in a home that is rich in history and features floor plans and amenities they desire.

In Phase II of HCH’s residential development, 623 homes in the Historic District will be restored or rehabilitated resulting in an end state of 438 homes. In October, renovation work on units for Enlisted Families and a portion of units for Officer Families got underway. Renovations generally break down into three categories:
Conversion of duplex units
Additions to Homes
Interior Reconfigurations

In addition to sustaining the historical character of homes, HCH will add environmentally sustainable technologies throughout all its renovations.

Prior to starting renovation work on the larger scale described above, HCH began the Select Home Restorations on one of each house type nearly two years ago. These homes are restored as closely as possible to their original state while still adding modern amenities such as dishwashers and air conditioning. This was done to ensure the preservation of each type and to ensure that the historic requirements of the Air Force’s Programmatic Agreement were met. Homes in the first phase of major renovations are scheduled for completion at the end of August 2010, and all renovations in the Historic District will be completed by 2013.
